Teaching Challenged Learners
If you are reading this post, we likely have something in common; we both have children who present special challenges in teaching and home education.
Some of you have brought your known special needs children home from the public school because the system just was not working anymore for them.
Some of you ‘thought’ you were teaching typical learning children and found that something was not working or, everything was not working for that one homeschooled child.
Many of you are discouraged, overburdened, and heavy hearted at which way to turn to help your children.
My goals in having this tab on the blog:
1- Remind you, we are not alone and that we are here to encourage one another
2- Help guide you on your journey to finding
what tools and resources can help you in teaching your special learner
Let me share a very heart warming poem. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty in choosing what child will be in each family.
Heaven’s Very Special Child
A meeting was held quite far from earth
“It’s time again for another birth”
Said the angel to the Lord above, ”
This special child will need much love.”
His progress may seem very slow,
Accomplishment he may not show.
And he’ll require extra care
From the folks he meets way down there.
He may not run or laugh or play
His thoughts may seem quite far away
In many ways he won’t adapt
And He’ll be known as handicapped.
So let’s be careful where he’s sent
We want his life to be content
Please, Lord, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.
They will not realize right away
The leading role they’re asked to play
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love.
And soon they’ll know the privilege given
In caring for this gift from Heaven
Their precious charge, so meek and mild
Is Heaven’s very special child.
If you are like me, you may have felt the temptation to say,
“DID YOU REALLY THINK I WAS CUT OUT FOR THIS GOD?”
Some of you birthed your own children, some of you adopted some or all of your children. Some of you knew what you were getting into before your child may have even been born, I suspect most of you did not.
Maybe even some of you are just now learning or have just been told of what is not ‘typical’ about your child and you are in a crisis of sorts for which way to turn.
First I want to encourage you with 6 points to remember at times like that:
1-God is still on the throne
2-There are things you cannot control
3-Trials are for our benefit
4-Your greatest concern must be to honor God
5-You must go to God’s Word for counsel and pray for him to guide you to resources that can help your child make their full potential.
6-God is the God of all Grace, cast all your care upon him for he loves you and cares for you. He is your able helper.
I Peter 5:6-10—
“1Pe 5:6 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
1Pe 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
1Pe 5:9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
1Pe 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you.”
My hope is to help strengthen you on this difficult journey
